Here is some news from the PIN and EPHC projects:

EPHC (Carole Holland)

It is several months since those of you at the Nepal evening in the village hall heard the latest news from EPHC, the children's charity in Kathmandu and I thought you would be interested in hearing how the new school building, which you have helped to fund, is progressing.
Work on the top floor of the three storey building should nearly be completed by the time you read this. As soon as a floor is finished, children and teachers move in and at the moment 115 children aged from 2 to 7 years old are clearly loving being in their new school, as are the teachers, all enjoying the relative spaciousness of their surroundings. Eventually the school should accommodate 190 children in total. Substantial iron bannisters and railings up to and around the balcony on the first floor have been installed to prevent children or adults falling when they visit the office, very much an extra in Nepali terms. It is hoped that a second toilet will be added soon - at present there is just a "black hole" squatter under the stairs. Outside there is a play area, much larger than at the old building, which even has a couple of swings in it.
When the children reach 7 years old they should move on to state funded school, which is "free", but for these families the expense of registration and administration fees plus uniforms, books, pens etc. is quite beyond them so their education is finished. For the last few years EPHC has searched for sponsors to enable these children to continue their education. £80 per year will cover all their expenses and give these desperately poor children a chance in life. This is the time of year when children register and sponsors are needed. If you would like to become a sponsor of one or more children, please contact me for more details. Be assured that all the money goes to the child, non is taken for administration. It is remarkable that such a relatively small amount of money in our terms can make such a huge difference to a child's life and future.

The donation raised at the Promises Auction has been used in part to provide games equipment for the Youth Club such as table tennis equipment. We did not buy a table but the equipment is used on a metal table we found. Other sorts of games such as Ludo, a small CD player for musical games and we also provide a sandwich and drink for them out of the money. The biggest thing is the proposed building beside one of the little houses to improve sleeping arrangements for a very large family and to provide a workshop for the teaching of bead work to not only the youth but also to some of the grandmothers. I had hoped to have pictures of the building but the planning application has only been accepted during my visit. I am attaching pictures of some of the children using the table tennis equipment and games.
Some of the donation has been used towards bursaries for the older children and covering the cost of extra food parcels.

Here are some photographs of some of the people using the table tennis equipment and games.
